Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA) Governor Harry W. Nice Bridge

J. A. Rice, Inc. provides land surveying services to the Maryland Transportation Authority as a sub-consultant for bridge monitoring at the Governor Harry W. Nice Bridge. Using our GPS and Total Station equipment, we have gathered coordinate data with elevations for monitoring the bridge’s support structure.

The survey is performed on the 84 concrete bents and pier caps supporting the structure of the Governor Harry W. Nice Bridge on US 301 crossing the Potomac River. J.A. Rice, Inc. coordinated access to the pier caps with Bridge personnel.

Topographic Survey

Under the direction of the client, J.A. Rice, Inc. developed and performed data collection survey procedures for bridge monitoring using our GPS and Total Station monitoring equipment, software, and skills. This included solving the problem of accessing the pier caps and bents to set monitoring points and collect survey data by having a custom made access platform built and mounted on a 25’ Sea Arc with Twin 135 Mercury Motors.

J.A. Rice, Inc. set bridge monitoring points for the Eastbound and the Westbound spans of the bridge. Initial readings were taken to establish x, y, z values. Annually for the next five years, readings will be taken and the survey data reported to the client.

Deliverables to the client included a spreadsheet report showing the horizontal and vertical data collected on the bridge monitoring points. They also included all closures, level runs, and completed bookwork.
